- Diabetes: this is not strictly a deterrent for a massage, but massage has the same effect as exercise on your blood sugar levels so you need to have appropriate medication available
- Immediately after surgery, chemotherapy or radiation
- Osteoporosis—you should consult your doctor before a massage
- Pregnant women should avoid massage of the abdomen, legs and feet during the first three months of pregnancy.
- Proneness to blood clots. There is a risk of blood clots being dislodged during a massage
- If you have heart disease, check with your doctor beforehand
- Direct pressure on bruises, inflamed skin, unhealed wounds, tumors, abdominal hernia, recent fractures, muscle tears and sprained ligaments
- Diseased blood vessels: varicose veins, phlebitis, thrombosis
- Infectious skin disease: rash, bacterial infection, lymphangitis, fungal infection, viral infections, herpes
- Hemophilia
Massage will not be given under the following conditions:
- Cold or Flu until symptoms have resolved
- Fever
- Systemic infections until after at least 3 days of antibiotics
- Severe pain of unknown cause (see a physician)
- Complications with pregnancy
